Project Overview
Beyond the Scoreboard is a nonprofit organization helping to build financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills in urban youth athletes (10-17). The Empowering Future Leaders project aims to fill some of the educational needs of youth athletes who often leave sports before their skills transfer into everyday life. Young people usually give up sports at an early age, and they do so with harmful consequences and few opportunities.
Needs to be Addressed
The program addresses youth disengagement, particularly in urban athletes, who might need access to the life skills and financial training they need to transition into adulthood successfully.
Entrepreneurial mindsets and life skills beyond sports need urgent improvement, which the current educational system needs to focus on.
Proposed Activities and Services
To achieve its objectives, we will implement the following activities:
- Entrepreneurial Workshops: Guided workshops to introduce participants to entrepreneurial concepts (business planning and finances) to cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets.
- Life Skills Training: Engaging lessons on life skills — budgeting, teamwork, problem-solving — will help children to put their sporting experience into action.
- After-School Enrichment Programs: We will conduct two (2) after-school sessions for interactive financial literacy and entrepreneurship training.
- Community Engagement: The program will establish connections with five or more local businesses and community partners for better learning and mentoring.
- Data-Driven Evaluation: A full-scale evaluation will monitor the participant’s progress by assessing life skills and entrepreneurial attitude before and after the event.
Population Groups to Be Served
Empowering Future Leaders’s target population includes urban 10–17-year-old youth athletes who are at a pivotal moment in their sporting careers and may need additional support moving into adulthood. In addressing this group, Beyond the Scoreboard will enable youth to use their sports lives to achieve more, producing resilient and well-informed citizens ready to make a difference in their communities.
